Throughout the whole bush to the cup process, our coffees are carefully selected, blended, roasted and packed to produce a fresh, high quality and convenient roast and ground coffee.

The coffees in our Café Express blends are specifically chosen for their quality and are grown by Fairtrade coffee farmers in Central and South America and Africa. The high altitudes and volcanic soils in these locations provide the perfect growing conditions for the coffee bush.  The high altitudes ensures that the coffee cherries mature slowly, allowing more time for the fine flavours to develop whilst the high concentration of minerals in the volcanic soils provide a fertile growing environment for the coffee bush.

Once the coffee cherries have ripened to a deep red colour they are ready to be picked. The farmer will selectively pick each cherry to ensure that only the ripest and best quality cherries are processed.  After harvesting the flesh is then stripped off to expose the coffee bean inside the cherry.  The farmer then lays the green beans on large patios or tables to dry in the sun.  The drying process takes up to four weeks with the farmer regularly turning the beans to ensure an even drying.  This slow drying process allows the sugars in the beans to develop, giving our coffees a sweet rounded flavour.

Prior to shipment the coffee is sent to us at Cafe Express for tasting. If the coffee maintains the quality required for our Café Express blend we inform the exporter who will then arrange for the shipping of the coffee to the UK.  Once the coffee has arrived we carefully blend each origin ensuring that the flavour profile of each coffee perfectly complements one another.  The blend is then roasted to a precise time and temperature in order to achieve the optimum flavour of each component in the blend.

Immediately after roasting the coffee is ground and packed into our unique Café Express bags and then individually foil wrapped in a protective atmosphere to maintain freshness and ensure that the coffee cannot stale.

Once the whole process has finished we always taste samples of our Café Express bags to ensure that we are producing a coffee that the farmer would be proud of.


Our decaffeinated Café Express blend is gently decaffeinated using carbon dioxide which gently draws the caffeine out of the bean without affecting the flavour.  This ensures that the consumer can enjoy the great taste of our Café Express coffee bags without the caffeine.
